El merengue apambichao

The Pambiche or merengue apambichao is a type of merengue that developed in the Dominican Republic during the American invasion (1916-1924).

Story has it that American soldiers were often called “pambiche”, which derived from the mispronunciation of the American city Palm Beach in Florida. Since the soldiers had a rough time keeping up with the fast-tempo merengue, musicians started playing a slowed down version that became known as “pambiche” o “merengue apambichao”.
