In 1803, Francisco Balmis, the personal doctor of King Charles IV of Spain, led an ambitious, international healthcare expedition. Its goal was to carry the smallpox vaccine to inoculate people across the Spanish Empire.
To ensure the vaccine arrived safely, 22 Spanish children sailed to America and Asia carrying the vaccine on their bodies.
