El silbo gomero is a special language that uses whistles (silbos) instead of letters from La Gomera, in the Canary Islands.
The main purpose of this whistled language was sending messages across great distances, but nowadays people use it recreationally and to preserve their cultural heritage.
Originally developed by the Guanches, the native inhabitants of the island, the current version of el silbo was adapted into Spanish after the arrival of Spanish settlers.
