“Gracias a la vida” is a folk song written, composed and originally performed by Chilean artist Violeta Parra in 1966, and famously covered in 1971 by Argentinean folk singer Mercedes Sosa.
Originally written as a poem, in this beautiful song Violeta Parra expresses gratitude for the life she has lived and the senses that have allowed her to enjoy all the wonders that surround her.
There are different theories as to the influences that led to the song’s creation and even more interpretations of Violeta’s intent behind the song, but one thing is for certain “Gracias a la vida” is a moving hymn to life.
