Easy Podcast: La guerra de los cristeros

“La Guerra de los cristeros” started when Mexican president Plutarco Elías Calles passed a law aimed at dissolving the power of the Catholic Church in Mexico in 1926. The new law restricted religious freedom, closing down religious schools, depriving the Church of their property rights, and punishing those who openly practiced their Catholic faith, among other provisions.

As a result, Catholics started to rebel and fight back against the Mexican government triggering a violent armed conflict that extended for three years and left approximately 250 000 dead.
