La Santería

Santeria was born out of the merging of the Yoruba religion and European Catholicism when the Yoruba were enslaved and brought to Cuba and Brazil to work on sugar plantations.

While pretending to accept Catholic teachings, the Yoruba people found ways to preserve their own belief system by syncretizing their Orishas (deities) with the Catholic Saints which over time evolved into its own religion known as Santeria.
