Verbos that end in CER/ CIR:
When conjugating verbs that end in CER or CIR which are preceded by a vowel, we must add a -Z in front of the -C. This conjugation rule applies only to the first person singular (yo). Verbs that fall on this category include: conocer, conducir, traducir, ofrecer.
Verbos that end in GER / GIR:
When conjugating these verbs, we must switch the -G for a -J on the first person singular (yo) only. This spelling change takes place to match the phonetic pronunciation of the verb when conjugated. Verbs that fall on this category include: coger, elegir, dirigir, exigir.
