ORIGEN: Este término deriva del árabe hispánico ‘maṭmúra’ que a su vez proviene del árabe clásico ‘maṭmūrah’ que significa ‘silo’ o ‘granero’, especialmente los situados bajo tierra.

DEFINICIÓN: De acuerdo al Diccionario de la lengua española ‘mazmorra’ significa ‘prisión subterránea’.

TIPO: Es un sustantivo femenino; su plural se forma añadiendo la ‘s’ final (‘mazmorras). Es una palabra llana de 3 sílabas: maz-MO-rra.

CORRESPONDENCIA EN INGLÉS:  dungeon.

USO: 

• Cuando hicimos el tour del castillo también pudimos ver las mazmorras donde detenían a los prisioneros. When we did the castle tour, we also got to see the dungeons where they used to hold the prisoners.
• La cárcel de este pueblo todavía tiene una mazmorra, pero no se usa para los detenidos porque no está en buenas condiciones. The town’s jail still has a dungeon, but they don’t hold prisoners there anymore because it’s not in good conditions.
