We have two different ways to help you figure out your Spanish levels. Both are valid. Choose the one that better fits how you’re feeling now:
Technical Online Placement Test
10-15 minutes – Immediate results
This is an interactive test with questions about grammar, comprehension and vocabulary. After you complete the test, you will automatically receive your level results: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or C2.
This test is right for you if:

Important: For the results to be accurate, take the test without any external help (translator, Google, etc). This test is not about passing or failing. It’s a tool for us to determine your current Spanish level and get to know you better.
Reflexive self-assessment
5 minutes – You determine the level you belong to
Read the descriptions for each Spanish level and choose the one that better describes your current skills. It’s faster, less technical, and it’s particularly useful when you already have a good grasp on your own skills.
This test is right for you if:

You prefer self-assessment over test taking.

You already have a good idea of your current level.

You suffer from test anxiety.
You can use and understand very basic everyday expressions and very simple phrases. You can introduce yourself and others, ask and answer personal questions such as where you live, the people that you know and the things you own. You can have simple interactions as long as the other person speaks slowly and clearly, and they’re willing to help you understand the sentences.
In practical terms, you can:
- Say your name, age, nationality.
- Order a cup of coffee.
- Ask someone “¿Cómo estás?” and understand a basic answer.
- Understand simple signs (Entrada, Salida, Baño) and directions.
You can understand high-frequency phrases and expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). You can successfully communicate during simple, everyday tasks that require a direct exchange of information about routine and familiar matters. You can describe in simple terms facts about your past, your immediate surroundings and matters that require immediate attention.
In practical terms, you can:
- Talk about work and family in the present tense.
- Talk about your basic daily routine.
- Shop at a store and discuss prices in simple terms.
- Book a hotel room reservation.
- Talk about your childhood and past events.
You can understand the main facts when talking about familiar topics such as work, school, or hobbies, using clear and standard language. You can deal with most situations that could come about while travelling through somewhere where people speak Spanish. You can write simple and cohesive texts about topics that you’re familiar with or in which you have a personal interest. You can describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions, as well as give reasons for brief explanations about plans and opinions.
In practical terms, you can:
- Have conversations about your life for 15-20 minutes straight.
- Explain why you like or dislike something.
- Tell anecdotes using past tense.
- Understand the main ideas when watching a movie with subtitles.
- Travel through Spain or Latin America, without needing an interpreter at all times.
You can understand the main ideas on complex texts about both specific and abstract topics, including technical discussions about your area of expertise. You can communicate with others with a level of fluidity and spontaneity that allows you to regularly interact with native Spanish speakers, without stress for any of the parties. You can write clear and detailed texts about a wide-range of topics, put forward a particular point of view explaining the pros and cons of different options.
In practical terms, you can:
- Have fluent conversations about different topics for 30+ minutes straight.
- Argue a personal, professional or political opinion.
- Understand –with some effort- movies and TV shows without subtitles.
- Use your Spanish on your professional field.
- Read books and newspaper articles with only the occasional use of a dictionary.
You can understand a wide-range of extensive and complex texts, as well as their implied messages. You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously, without having to waste time searching for the right expression. You can use the Spanish language effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. You can write clear, detailed and well-structured texts on complex topics, displaying a controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive resources.
In practical terms, you can:
- Engage in complex debates with ease.
- Understand humorous and cultural nuances.
- Give a work presentation in Spanish without preparing in advance.
- Understand different accents and dialects.
- Write complex profesional emails.
You can easily understand practically everything that you hear or read. You can sum up information from different spoken or written sources, reconstructing stories and arguments into a cohesive presentation. You can express yourself fluently, accurately and spontaneously, picking up subtle layers of meaning even in the most complex situations.
In practical terms, you can:
- Have conversations as well as any educated, native Spanish speaker.
