Uses of el pretérito simple o indefinido (simple past):

We use the pretérito indefinido to narrate past events. These events begin and finish in a past which the speaker considers to be more or less distant.

We typically use it with past time markers, such as ayer, el año pasado, el jueves pasado, etc.

• Ayer me levanté a las 6 de la mañana; estuve muy cansado todo el día. Yesterday I got up at 6 in the morning; I was tired all day long.
• El año pasado pasó muy rápido; espero que este año sea más tranquilo. Last year went by very quickly; I hope this year will be more relaxed.
• Ellos viajaron a España el verano pasado. They travelled to Spain last summer.

Uses of el pretérito imperfecto (imperfect past):

We use the pretérito imperfecto to a) describe things and people in a story that takes place in the past, b) discuss past routines or repeated actions, c) express an action in an undetermined period of time in the past:

• El día estaba muy bonito: el cielo estaba despejado, la temperatura era muy agradable, había muchas flores de colores por todo el parque y todos estaban de buen humor. It was a lovely day: the sky was clear, the temperature was very nice, there were colorful flowers all over the park and everyone was in a good mood.
• Cuando estaba en universidad, iba al gimnasio cuatro veces por semana, pero ahora no tengo tanto tiempo. When I was in college, I would go to the gym four times per week, but I don’t have that kind of time now.
• En el pasado los niños podían jugar afuera todo el día. In the past kids could play outside all day long.

We often combine the pretérito indefinido and imperfecto to tell stories and anecdotes:

Ayer me levanté a las 6 de la mañana porque tenía una reunión importante de trabajo. Estaba muy nervioso. Tomé mi desayuno mientras repasaba los detalles de mi presentación y luego salí para la oficina bien temprano. No quería llegar tarde. Por sue-alunamarte la presentación fue un éxito. Cuando llegué a casa estaba muy cansado, por eso fuí a dormir temprano.
