“Raro” y “extraño” son dos adjetivos que tienen algunas cosas en común, pero también tienen diferencias. Vamos a comparar los usos de cada uno:

1) RARO AS WEIRD:

When describing a peculiar or unusual situation, thing or behavior, ‘raro’ is translated as ‘weird’, ‘odd’:

• ¡Qué raro que no hayan llegado todavía! Ellos son muy puntuales. How weird that they’re not here yet! They’re typically very punctual.
• ¡Esta película es muy rara; no tiene sentido! This movie is so weird; it makes no sense!

2) RARO AS STRANGE:

When something or someone looks odd or extravagant, we translate ‘raro’ as ‘strange’, ‘odd’, ‘funny-looking’:

• Juan está allí; es el del sombrero raro. Juan is over there; he’s the one in the strange-looking hat.
• ¿Quieres pintar la casa naranja? ¡Se verá muy rara! You want to paint the house orange? It’ll look very strange!

3) EXTRAÑO AS STRANGE:

When describing an odd or unusual feeling or sensation,  ‘extraño’ is described as ‘strange’, ‘odd’:

• ¿Escuchaste ese ruido extraño? ¿Qué fue eso? Did you hear that strange noise? What was that?
• Tengo una sensación extraña, pero no sé por qué. I have a strange feeling, but I can’t put my finger on it.

2) EXTRAÑO AS STRANGE OR WEIRD:

When someone or something is unfamiliar, peculiar or unique, often with a negative connotation, we can translate ‘extraño’ as  both ‘strange’ or ‘weird’:

• Los nuevos vecinos son muy extraños; no salen mucho y no hablan con nadie. The new neighbors are so weird; they don’t leave the house much and they don’t talk to the neighbors.
• ¡Este lugar es muy extraño! Son las 3 de la tarde y todas las tiendas están cerradas. This place is so strange! It’s 3 pm and all the stores are closed.
