Víctor Jara was a teacher, theater director, singer-songwriter, and political activist from Chile.
Jara was best known for his folk protest songs and was a key member of the social musical movement “Nueva canción chilena” (New Chilean Song).
As a vocal supporter of Chilean President Salvador Allende, Jara was arrested, tortured and murdered shortly after Allende was overthrown in a military coup led by Augusto Pinochet.
