According to Aztec mythology, Coatlicue is the earth goddess, mother of gods, and a symbol of life and death.

The name Coatlicue comes from the náhuatl language and it roughly translates as ‘she who has the skirt of snakes’. This powerful goddess gave birth to the moon, the stars, and to Huitzilopochtli, the god of the sun and war.

Huitzilopochtli led the Aztec people to the territory now known as la Ciudad de Mexico where they adopted the name of Mexica and established one of the largest empires of the pre-Hispanic world.
