José Alberto Mujica Cordano, better known as Pepe Mujica, is a former revolutionary and politician who served as president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015.
As a young man, Mujica was tortured and imprisoned for over a decade for his political ideals and activities during Uruguay’s last dictatorship.
Today, he continues to work to upheld these ideals, and he’s often referred to as “the world’s humblest head of state” for his modest lifestyle.
