Description
In this course, students will be able to enjoy, analyze and discuss the movies of the legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.
Pedro Almodóvar’s films have received international recognition: two Academy Awards (and five nominations), two Golden Globes, and a multitude of awards from international movie festivals. His films have a distinct personality and aesthetic that makes them stand out; he’s well known for his eccentric characters and –particularly- his female characters that are strong, feisty and on-the-edge-of-a-breakdown. Despite his flair for the strange and surreal, both his comedies and dramas, accurately portray social changes in contemporary Spain.
All these reasons make his films a fun and original medium through which we can learn and practice Spanish, with their rich and varied vocabulary, their riveting stories, and their modern yet slightly extravagant vision of contemporary Spain.
Students will first watch the movies on their own before each class, and during the sessions we will discuss, clarify and review the films’ key aspects. Students will have access to the movies as well as texts, interviews, reviews and other relevant information about each film.
