The Battle of Puebla took place on 5 May 1862, near Puebla City, between the Mexican and French army during the Second French Intervention in Mexico. Although the Battle of Pueblo did not prevent the French invasion, by defeating the more experienced and better equipped French army, the Mexican army experienced a significant morale boost and managed to considerably slow down the foreign forces.
Every year Puebla celebrates this remarkable victory, which also gave rise to the popular Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States.
