Easy Podcast: Almería, Los túneles que salvaron vidas

Almería is a beautiful city located in Andalucía, Spain, with one of the better preserved systems of underground shelters in Europe.

These shelters were built during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) due to the heavy bombings the city was under (up to 52 bombings from air and sea, with a total of 754 bombs dropped). The Almería shelters offered protection for approximately 40,000 civilians and were equipped with storage rooms for food and weapons, and with operation rooms and infirmaries.

Currently the well-preserved underground tunnels are one of Almería’s main touristic attractions.
