It’s a common mistake to think of qué and cuál purely in terms of their English equivalents because it can actually can make things more complicated. Instead, it’s best to look at their respective uses:
Uses of cuál:
This interrogative pronoun is used to identify an element (an object or a person) that belongs to a group. It’s the right question word to use when we’re trying to choose one thing from a set of options. We can also use it in the plural form.
- ¿Cuál es tu película favorita? Which is your favorite movie?
- ¿Cuáles son tus llaves? Which are your keys?
- ¿Cuál de los dos chicos es tu amigo? Which of the two boys is your friend?
- De todas tus chaquetas, ¿cuál te gusta más? Out of all your jackets, which is your favorite?
- ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre ser y estar? Which is the difference between ser and estar?
- ¿Cuál es la mejor película de superhéroes? Which is the best superhero movie?
- ¿Cuál de las dos prefieres? Which one do you prefer?
Note: ¿Cuál? is used as equivalent of the English what when we ask for an identification, clarification or specification:
- ¿Cuál es la capital de Perú? What is the capital of Peru?
- ¿Cuál fue el resultado de las elecciones? What was the result of the elections?
Uses of qué:
Qué can be a pronoun or an adjective. We use qué as an adjective alongside a noun to inquire after an object or a person:
- ¿Qué película estás viendo? What movie are you watching?
- ¿Qué tipo de comida prefieres? What type of cuisine do you prefer?
- ¿Qué idiomas hablas? What languages do you speak?
- ¿Qué clases tomarás el próximo semestre? What classes will you be taking next semester?
We use qué as a pronoun when we wish to obtain general information:
- ¿Qué te gusta leer? What do you like to read?
- ¿Qué haces generalmente en tus vacaciones? What do you usually do during your weekends?
- ¿Qué quieres beber? What do you want to drink?
- ¿Qué vas a hacer este fin de semana? What are you doing this weekend?
