‘El llanito’ is a linguistic variety from Gibraltar that combines English and Spanish, along with influences of Hebrew, Arabic, Portuguese, Maltese, and Genoese.
Gibraltar is a British colony found south of Spain and its history and geographical location have been instrumental to the development of el llanito.
While people from Gibraltar are bilingual in both English and Spanish, lots of people prefer to use llanito in everyday conversation which can be confusing for those unfamiliar with this language variety.
