Discover the fascinating history of el palenquero while improving your Spanish listening comprehension!
San Basilio de Palenque is a small village in Colombia, best known for being the first free African town in the American continent. This village is also the birthplace of el palenquero, the sole Spanish-based creole language spoken in Latin America.
For many years, this distinctive language was met with prejudice and discrimination causing its own people to feel ashamed of their heritage. Fortunately, in recent years they started to reclaim their language and -in the process- proudly embrace the legacy of their ancestral heritage.
