The hermanas Mirabal were three sisters from the Dominican Republic who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo.
Patria, Minerva, María Teresa, popularly known as “las mariposas” (the butterflies), fought against the regime for over a decade before they were assassinated on 25 November 1960.
After their death, the Mirabal sisters became a symbol of the resistance, and in 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in their honor.
