After colonizing Mexico, the Spanish installed a caste system that continued in place long after Mexico declared its independence. This caste system placed the native Maya population at the bottom of the social pyramid, resulting in systemic discrimination, mistreatment and loss of rights.

In the Yucatán Peninsula, the situation reached its a breaking point in 1847 with the uprising of a large group of Maya natives that targeted the white and mestizo population and aimed at reclaiming their rights and freedom.
