Voz activa is the typical order of the basic elements in a sentence (doer + action + object of the action). In certain contexts, we can change this order to emphasize an action and indicate who has been affected by it; this is known as voz pasiva.
When we use the voz pasiva, the doer of the action loses relevance, either because we don’t know them or because they’re not as important as the action itself.
How to form the voz pasiva?
Let’s take a look first at a voz activa sentence:
Voz activa: Los niños hacen sus tareas.
[Subject/doer] [verb] [direct object]
Voz pasiva: Las tareas son hechas por los niños.
- The direct object of the active sentence (eg: las tareas) becomes the grammatical subject of the passive sentence; this is known as «sujeto pasivo».
- We express the action using SER + PARTICIPIO PASADO (eg: son hechas) of the verb in the active sentence.
- The preposition ‘por’ follows the action and precedes the doer of the action (eg: por los niños). The past participle must agree with the sujeto pasivo (eg: las tareas –> hechas = both femeninos and plurales).
Activa: El mecánico reparó el coche.
Pasiva: El coche fue reparado por el mecánico.
Activa: Jaime escribió la carta.
Pasiva: La carta fue escrita por Jaime.
Activa: Los alumnos entregaron las composiciones.
Pasiva: Las composiciones fueron entregadas por los alumnos.
We do not use voz pasiva with:
1. Verbos de percepción o emoción (escuchar, odiar, oír, querer, sentir, temer y ver):
- El dulce fue querido por Miguelito. (Incorrect)
- La película fue vista por Tomás. (Incorrect)
2. Un tiempo progresivo (estar + gerundio):
- El libro estaba siendo leído por Juan. (Incorrect)
- Las tortillas estaban siendo preparadas por mi abuela. (Incorrect)
3. Un objeto indirecto (me, te, le, nos, os, les):
- El regalo le fue comprado a Elena por Jorge. (Incorrect)
- Los tamales son hechos para la familia por la abuela. (Incorrect)
