(1) GRAN AS GREAT
To talk about something or someone who is powerful, influential or remarkable in some way, we
translate “gran” as “great”:
La primera, por parte de Nueva España (actual México) que soñaba con crear una gran
Nación que abarcara toda Centroamérica y que perfectamente podría llegar hasta Panamá.
The first one was proposed by New Spain (current Mexico) who dreamed about creating
a great Nation that would encompass all of Central America and that could effectively include
Panama.
(2) GRAN AS GRAND
When something or someone is impressive or imposing as a result of their size, importance,
status, etc, we translate this adjective as “grand”:
El lujoso evento tuvo lugar en una gran mansión en las afueras de la ciudad.
The luxurious event took place in a grand mansion in the outskirts of town.
(3) GRAN AS LARGE
When we are describing size or dimensions, “gran” is translated as “large”:
Es un gran museo; te tomará mucho tiempo ver todas las exhibiciones.
It is a large museum; it will take you a lot of time to see all the exhibits.
(4) GRAN AS BIG
When we are talking about something of great importance or significance, we translate “gran”
as “big”:
Su trabajo tuvo un gran impacto en la vida de muchas personas.
Her work had a big impact in the lives of many people.
